My friend Janet Horn and I were tired of having trouble finding resources to answer our own questions regarding our health. So, what does one do when that happens? Of course you write your own book after looking for answers and finding them! Read our press release that is hot off the presses....
The Smart Woman's Guide : The Only Health Book Midlife Women Need!
The success of the recent blockbuster film, "Sex and the City," has clearly shown just how important girlfriends are to a woman's health and wellbeing, no matter what her age.  The physician authors of the new book, The Smart Woman's Guide to Midlife and Beyond: A No-Nonsense Guide to Staying Healthy after 50, demonstrate that firsthand.

Dr. Janet Horn and Dr. Robin Miller met on the first day of their fellowships at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1983, and, over the next two years they had twice weekly long chats at the hospital café. Despite their being on opposite coasts for the rest of their medical careers, those chats have continued for the past 23 years.

Those girlfriend to girlfriend conversations between the two women physicians inspired this book. Over the years, the general content of their talks did not change substantially until recently when they began to spend  more time talking about their own health concerns as their maturing bodies continually surprised them with new symptoms. They realized that the health concerns that they frequently discuss - from aching joints to memory lapses to hot flashes and insomnia to bowel problems to new onset fatigue  are similar to those of their women patients and of other women at this age and older.  As a result, The Smart Woman's Guide to Midlife and Beyond  was born.

Women over 50 are living life to the fullest in ways never dreamed of by women of prior generations. And it follows that these women are interested in remaining active and vibrant, and are thus concerned about optimizing their health. The Smart Woman's Guide to Midlife and Beyond  is the book that addresses their health issues by focusing on the prevention of the most common diseases that occur as the body matures, and on the management of symptoms that may indicate a medical emergency. The most recent medical research pertaining to women of various ethnic groups and lifestyles is discussed, as are the latest advances in treatment.  Not only are specific recommendations from the traditional medical field given, but the book also offers suggestions from the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), including the appropriate use of herbs, vitamins and such therapies as acupuncture and massage.
In addition, the authors have created a method, called "The 4 A's", that helps the reader organize, simplify, and remember what she needs to do to stay healthy and active, and they show you how to apply it to all of their recommendations throughout the book.  The book is written in an informal and conversational style, with special attention given to easy-to-understand explanations of commonly used medical terms and concepts. To make their book an entertaining read as well as an informative one, the authors include anecdotes about their own experiences with aging, their personal regimens of everything from exercise to eating to skincare, and stories of their patients' experiences.  In addition, at the end of each chapter is included a list of important take-home points; also at the end of each chapter, the docs do what they've been doing for 23 years - chat with one another! (about issues just discussed)  A detailed health maintenance schedule, a recommended reading list, and an extensive list of references aid the reader in her quest to stay healthy. In addition, the authors have launched a website in order to continue their chats with their readers. The address is: smartwomanshealth.com
