It looks like flu season is in full swing. Please take care of yourselves. Eat healthy, exercise, wash your hands and take your probiotics. There is something else that can boost your immune system and that is......Exercise.

Is exercise the fountain of youth?

Exercise is good for so many things. It helps to prevent high blood pressure, heart disease and control cholesterol. It improves the body's sensitivity to insulin preventing diabetes. Regular exercise has been found to cut breast cancer risk. It has even been found to prevent colds. In addition, it helps to keep all of the organs healthy including the heart.

A study done in Germany in 2004 compared angioplasty to exercise as a therapy in patients with clogged arteries. They found that after a year, regular exercise on a stationary bicycle relieved heart problems in 90% of the patients in the study. Those who had angioplasty had a 70% reduction in heart problems a year later.

It is estimated that as much as one-third of heart disease and strokes could be prevented in the US if people exercised with brisk walking two and a half hours a week.

There has been some recent bad press regarding exercise claiming that it does not help with weight loss. In certain cases it may not. When people work out hard at the gym, they often feel entitled to eat more. Unfortunately, that leads to either no weight loss or even weight gain. Those who maintain fitness are people who have incorporated activity into their life.

By walking to work or parking your car far from work so that you get a bit of a walk, by gardening, taking the stairs and all those little things that can add activity, you can maintain fitness. And, you can lose weight. You just have to commit to do it.

I doubt we will ever find the magic pill to help us stay young, fit, thin, and healthy. However, we have that ability right now. It isn't easy, but the key to the fountain of youth and vigor is (you guessed it)

EXERCISE!

Be Well!

Sincerely,
