It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming soon! I hope that you are all staying healthy and getting out to exercise even though the weather is changing. I have a suggestion.  You might want to think about dancing! Read on.

Time to dance!

On November 14, 2009 there will be the first annual "Dancing with the Rogue Valley Stars" event.  This event is a fundraiser for the Sparrow Club (http://www.sparrowclubs.org/).  This organization provides financial and emotional support to critically ill children and empowers other children to help through a charitable giving experience.

Why am I writing about the event? My reason is that I was fortunate enough to be asked to participate.  What I have found, in addition to having an amazing amount of fun for a great cause, is an activity that can improve circulation, memory, balance, and helps to make me feel strong and fit.  I also have gotten to know an enthusiastic group of people of all ages who love to teach and dance.

I am going to be dancing the Argentine tango.  There are studies that have discovered that this dance when taught in as little as 20 minute intense sessions can improve balance and mobility in patients with Parkinson's disease. It has also been used worldwide to improve functioning of those with Alzheimer's disease.

Social dancing in general has been noted to reduce stress, improve strength, energy, muscle tone and coordination.   If you dance the night away you can burn more calories than riding a bike or even swimming.   Despite which form of dance you choose, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) says that dancing can lower your risk of coronary heart disease, decrease blood pressure, help you manage your weight, and strengthen the bones of your legs and hips.

Personally, I have discovered that I feel sharper mentally, and I have noticed that my balance is improved along with the way that I carry myself.  I have also lost 3 pounds without trying.

This was my first experience with ballroom dancing, and if I can do it you can too.  My partner and teachers have shown amazing skill and patience.  What they have imparted to me is the love of dance and movement something which I know I will continue.  I highly recommend it!

If you are interested, there are wonderful teachers that can easily be found at the Evergreen Ballroom in Central Point.  Many of the dancers that teach there also teach in Grant's Pass and Ashland (www.evergreenballroom.com).

Come join the event at North Medford High School this Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 7 PM.  Tickets are $10 and the money goes to the Sparrows Club.
